  • AC 3 phase all voltages: (HP x 746) / (1.73 x E x Eff x PF)

Find amps when kilowatts are known

  • Direct current: (kW x 1000) / E

  • AC / 1 phase 115V or 120V: (kW x 1000) / (E x PF)

  • AC / 1 phase 208V, 230V, or 240V: (kW x 1000) / (E x PF)

  • AC 3 phase all voltages: (kW x 1000) / (1.73 x E x PF)

Find amps when kilovolt-amperes (kVA) are known

  • Direct current: Not applicable.

  • AC / 1 phase 115V or 120V: (kVA x 1000) / E

  • AC / 1 phase 208V, 230V, or 240V: (kVA x 1000) / E

  • AC 3 phase all voltages: (kVA x 1000) / (1.73 x E)

Find kilowatts

  • Direct current: (I x E) / 1000

  • AC / 1 phase 115V or 120V: (I x E x PF) / 1000

AC Efficiency and Power Factor Formulas

Voltage Drop Formulas

Voltage drop formulas calculate the reduction in voltage that occurs as electrical current flows through an electrical circuit or conductor, like a resistor or wire.

You can effectively calculate the voltage drop and circular mil area of the conductor using these formulas.

Single-phase (two- or three-wire) installation

  • VD = (2 x K x I x L) / CM

  • CM= (2K x L x I) / VD

Three-phase installation

  • VD = (1.73 x K x I x L) / CM

  • CM= ( 1.73 x K x L x I) / VD

1 cubic foot = 7.48 gallons
