Nail It Before You Scale It: Building a Legacy Brand in the Trades

September 10, 2024

Episode Overview

Yarbrough & Sons CFO Tucker Yarbrough knows his company has to “nail it before we scale it” in his Oklahoma-based heating, cooling and plumbing business.

However, his pathway to success isn’t roadmapped by big-business, how-to cliches. Rather, Yarbrough is adamant that trust and collaboration between team members in his family business is the North Star.

“In the end, it’s [all about] the trust that you build with your team,” he says.

The family-style culture has worked for Yarbrough & Sons. Over the last six years company revenue has more than doubled from $4.5 million to $11 million.

Could it have been more? Possibly, but the company culture comes first.

“I would rather enjoy a lesser peak with more people than a higher one alone,” Yarbrough says. “...We want to be the largest small business you ever work with.”

He realizes that in order to be a generous employer and also be a benefactor in the community, Yarbrough & Sons have to be profitable.

And they are, but Yarbrough is not blinded by the bottom line.

“Running the business by the spreadsheet, you know, can get you far,” he says. “But running it by the people gains you a lot of trust and a lot of social capital.”

By all means, Yarbrough is purposefully grounded in an even-keeled work-life balance.

“I think life [should be] spent with people that you love, know and trust…I think that that's a life worth living.”

Tucker Yarbrough recently joined ServiceTitan’s Jackie Aubel on the “Toolbox for the Trades” podcast, which included Yarbrough’s thoughts on:
